My little Aris, all grown up

Today TORN SKY, the third book in the REBEL WING series, is unleashed on the world. My mind is not quite grasping that yet, so I want to talk about why I love this series so much, why Rebel Wing is the book of my heart, and what's next for me.

Me in my lucky dress, holding a bouquet of paper flowers made from the Rebel Wing series

The Rebel Wing series is particularly dear to my heart because it features a lot of really strong, powerful women. They aren't all strong in the same ways, but they ALL were aspirational for me as I was writing. I wanted to have Aris's strength of will, Dysis's unapologetic badassery, Galena's power to survive and overcome. I still do! At the end of the first book, one of my favorite characters, Dianthe, tells Aris, "you are strong enough." That has become a sort of mantra for me. It's not just about being strong enough to deal with the crap life dishes out. It's also about being strong enough to change my lifestyle, or exercise more, or drag myself out of bed when I've stayed up too late reading and my toddler is READY TO GO. It's about being strong enough to be myself, to love the people and things I love, to let my nerd flag fly. Strong enough to be a woman and a feminist and a believer that we can do better for this world...and that starts with me being better to those around me, better to the environment, better to myself. If there is one thing, one single thing, I hope my readers get out of reading this series, it's this : "YOU ARE STRONG ENOUGH."

For whatever you HAVE to face, and for whatever you WANT to do or become. Chase your dreams, believe in yourself, believe you can change and grow, believe you can triumph.

When I was writing the original draft of REBEL WING, I was really low on confidence and tough stuff was going on in my life. My husband was deployed. I'd written two books that hadn't sold to publishers. I was feeling lonely, discouraged, physically weak, and unsure that the life I wanted was within my grasp. Like Aris, I needed someone to remind me that I was strong enough. That's why REBEL WING is the book of my heart. Writing it, I went through as much of a transformation as Aris did. I found faith in myself again, in my writing, just when I needed it most.

I cried a lot writing TORN SKY. It was difficult saying goodbye to Aris and Dysis and the men who supported them and grew with them. It was hard to let them all go. But I am really happy with the way their stories played out, and I hope you will be too.

Thank you for reading. Thank you for caring about Aris and her adventures, and for joining us for this final chapter. Aw, jeez. There I go again. Excuse me, I need to find a tissue.

As for what's next, I've got a few exciting things in the pipeline. A weird little short story in a Time Travel anthology coming out this fall (that may just be the start of a new series, WE SHALL SEE ;-)), a fantasy you may be able to get your hands on in the spring, and another secret project or two coming along after that. So, ya know...there's lots more to come! Stay tuned and happy reading!

Torn Sky Releases in ONE WEEK!

Guys, I'm still kind of in shock about this.

When I wrote the original version of REBEL WING, I wasn't sure if I'd ever have a chance to continue Aris's story. But thanks to Alloy and Amazon, this trilogy will be complete a week from today.

    Sigh....the pretty.

But this means I WROTE TWO BOOKS IN A YEAR. While going through a long, stressful move to Hawaii. It still blows my mind. (I don't even know how I'm functioning anymore. Sheesh.)

The truth is, I couldn't have done it without the awesome folks at Alloy and my wonderful inlaws, who let us live with them during the move and watched my toddler so I'd have more time to work.

And boy am I ready to celebrate all that hard work! Please join me and some of my awesome YA writer friends on release day - August 4 - on Facebook, for a party full of prizes, games, and fun extras. Click here to RSVP!

And get ready......TORN SKY will be out a week from today!! Hooray!!

Want to know what Aris and the crew are up to?

    Here are a few hints...

    Spy games!

    New romance!

    Debilitating injuries!

A bomb that could destroy the world!

    It's gonna be a good time. ;-)

For those missing The 100 (or who want free books)

Hello my friends! You may not know this, but I’m kiiiiiiind of obsessed with the CW’s show THE 100. It’s full of all the things I love about good TV: smart writing, complex, interesting characters, thorny ethical questions, and super high stakes. The show’s film, costume, and make-up geniuses have brought the world beautifully, brutally to life, and the writers have created such a visceral storytelling style that I am literally on the edge of my seat and hardly breathing through practically every episode. What I love most about it, though, is how much it makes me THINK. What would I do in that situation? Would I have the guts or the smarts to do what was necessary? Could I make that call? It’s a brilliant show, and if you haven’t seen it yet, get thee to Netflix!

Unfortunately for us all, though, THE 100 won’t be gracing our TV screens again until 2016. Sad face!! So, what are we to do in the meantime? Weeeell, I’d like to offer two humble suggestions!

First, if you haven’t checked them out yet, read THE 100, DAY 21, and HOMECOMING by Kass Morgan, the books the TV series is based on! (Especially if you’re a Bellarke fan. ;-)) The books are quite different from the show, but they’re equally entertaining. And there are a few goodies for fans (cough Bellarke cough) that we haven’t seen on the show yet.

Second, take a gander at my book REBEL WING. If you like the action and female badassery of THE 100, you're in luck! REBEL WING has war, secret political plotting, and lots of strong, complex female characters. And if you liked Octavia’s journey from sheltered girl to badass warrior, you may particularly enjoy the main character Aris’s transformation from a girl who’d give up everything for love, to a soldier who discovers there’s so much more to fight for. Oh, and have I mentioned Aris and her friends have to disguise themselves as men to join the war effort? Yeah, they’re pretty hardcore. ;-)

If you scroll down, you’ll find the official description of REBEL WING, BUT before you do that, let me tell you about the AMAZING giveaway I’m running!! My buddy Kass, along with Alloy Entertainment, have given me some incredible prizes to share with you! In addition to winning a signed paperback of REBEL WING, one lucky winner will also receive the COMPLETE THE 100 book series (all three books!!) signed by Kass Morgan herself! AND Alloy has donated some super cool THE 100 swag too. Um, AWESOME! If you’d like to enter, check out the Rafflecopter giveaway below.

Thanks for stopping by! I hope you’ll follow me on Twitter so we can angst together while we wait for season 3, and you can tell me what you think of Rebel Wing. (Also, I enjoy any and all Lincoln pics/gifs/fan art. Share any gloriousness you find with me, pretty please!)

Final note: You do NOT have to be a 100 fan to enter this contest. However, if you win, you may become one. You've been warned! ;-)

The Dominion of Atalanta is at war. But for eighteen-year-old Aris, the fighting is nothing more than a distant nightmare, something she watches on news vids from the safety of her idyllic seaside town. Then her boyfriend, Calix, is drafted into the Military, and the nightmare becomes a dangerous reality.

Left behind, Aris has nothing to fill her days. Even flying her wingjet—the thing she loves most, aside from Calix—feels meaningless without him by her side. So when she's recruited to be a pilot for an elite search-and-rescue unit, she leaps at the chance, hoping she'll be stationed near Calix. But there's a catch: She must disguise herself as a man named Aristos. There are no women in the Atalantan Military, and there never will be.

Aris gives up everything to find Calix: her home. Her family. Even her identity. But as the war rages on, Aris discovers she's fighting for much more than her relationship. With each injured person she rescues and each violent battle she survives, Aris is becoming a true soldier--and the best flyer in the Atalantan Military. She's determined to save her Dominion . . . or die trying.

Book 2, STORM FALL, is out now and book 3 will release this August. Cover and title reveal coming soon!

    A Giveaway + Paperbacks!

Hello, my friends! I apologize for the silent treatment! Ever since Storm Fall's release I've been in my writing cave working on Rebel Wing #3, which is coming to you this summer! Needless to say, my deadlines have been challenging, so there's been no time to blog. But I wanted to pop in and let you know that I'm currently running a Goodreads giveaway for TWO signed copies of the REBEL WING paperback, which comes out on June 2! Here's the link, if you'd like to enter!

I AM SO EXCITED about this paperback!! My deal with Alloy/Amazon does NOT guarantee paperback versions, so I was thrilled when I found out Rebel Wing would coming out in hard copy. You can preorder now, if you'd like! (You can even preview the first chapter and some bonus features on Amazon's site!)

Stay tuned for the cover, title, and release date announcement for Rebel Wing #3, coming soon!

    There's a Map!

So, as a scifi/fantasy fan, I think this is SUPER cool....the talented team at Alloy made a MAP of Atalanta! Seriously, seeing a visual representation of my made-up world has got to be one of the neatest things to happen so far on my publishing journey. Makes it feel so REAL. I mean - look! There's a map! :-D

I hope this will come in handy as you read Rebel Wing and Storm Fall! I believe the map will be included in Storm Fall when it releases, hopefully also in Rebel Wing as well, though I'm not 100% certain about that.

At any rate, what do you think? Is it how you pictured Atalanta? I hope it helps you visualize Aris's world!

    Also, happy Friday!
