    The Story Behind the Story

Phew! It's been a busy week! Between celebrating the big REBEL WING launch, and frantically trying to finish the first draft of its sequel (I have DEADLINES now, y'all!), I feel like the proverbial headless chicken. But I wanted to take a minute and tell you a little more about how my book deal came about, because folks have been asking...and it's a fun story. :-)

First of all, a little recap of my publishing journey to date: back in 2009, I wrote Moon Child. Found representation pretty quickly with a wonderful agent, but it didn't sell. Wrote By Blood. Same result, though we got REALLY REALLY close. MAJOR HOTSAUCE was deployed in summer of 2010. That fall, I wrote Shattered Veil, which was in part inspired by his deployment...and a great bonding experience while he was away. He helped me with a lot of the military scenes and political maneuvering. I thought this book was special. We fantasized about it selling big. Being a movie one day. When I submitted it to my agent, she suggested some pretty big changes that I didn't feel 100% comfortable with. But I desperately wanted THIS one to sell, so I made the changes. sale. Fast forward a few years, LOTS of revisions, a little more when I went indie. I started with my earlier series - I wanted to test the waters before putting Shattered Veil out in the world. And I needed time to revise it make it the story I really wanted to tell. In February 2014, Shattered Veil was finally published.

One Thursday in April, as I was knee-deep in writing the sequel (MAJOR HOTSAUCE was on toddler duty), I got two odd follows on Twitter, one after another. "Odd" because editors at publishing houses don't normally follow ME. Then, DING! An email through my blog. From a senior editor at Alloy Entertainment. Even though I'd heard of the company (they've been on my radar since the '90s - I was an original fan of L.J. Smith and The Vampire Diaries!), I was pretty sure it was spam. Because, um, the editor was raving about my book. MY book. She even used the word "obsessed". But I thought...okay....and opened an email to reply. Why not see what this was about? Before I had time to finish the email, three more messages dinged through my blog. Apparently the editor was getting an error message from the submission page. And then....a twitter DM. Wow, this person REALLY wanted to talk to me! So I sent the email.

When she replied immediately and asked if we could talk on the phone, I couldn't hold back the tummy flutters anymore. And by the end of that conversation (which I'm pretty sure I'll never forget), those flutters were full-on BATS. Because OH MY GOSH ALLOY ENTERTAINMENT WANTS TO BUY MY BOOK.

Not just my book. THREE BOOKS. They ended up buying the whole trilogy.

Guys, that day was everything I could have hoped for. It's what I had been working towards for years, the culmination of a life of writing into the void. Only it was BETTER than I imagined. Submitting to traditional publishers feels a lot like begging someone to like you. You send your stuff to them, hoping they'll deign to read it. Hoping they'll connect with it. Hoping they'll invest in you. Five years of submission is a lot of begging. And, when it happened, these wonderful kindred spirit editors actually CAME TO ME. No begging, except maybe a little on their part. ;-) The reversal was so incredibly unexpected, and so unbelievably welcome.

Ever since that day in April, every time I think about it I get chills. Someone read my book. Someone loved my book. Someone at ALLOY ENTERTAINMENT, the company responsible for most of my favorite TV shows. THIS WAS BIG.

It still feels big. And not because of sales or the fact that, after all these years, there's a (teeny tiny) chance Rebel Wing COULD become a movie. It feels big because of Lanie and Eliza, my editors. They LOVED this story. They read this story about eight times in all its iterations. They had hour-long conversations with me about the characters as if they were real people. They helped me make this story EVEN BETTER. (For those wondering, yes, REBEL WING *is* different from the previously indie published version. The plot stays the same, for the most part, but we did a ton of work on pacing, world building, etc., to help clarify and streamline everything. If you've read Shattered Veil, the new version is worth a read, especially if you plan to check out book 2, as some of the character names changed).

Lanie and Eliza's passion for this project, and their insightful feedback, was exactly why I'd originally pursued traditional publishing in the first place. I wanted to be part of a publishing TEAM. And let me tell you, I hit the jackpot as far as teams go.

Back in June, I had the opportunity to visit a dear friend in NYC (hi Helo!! *waves*) and while there I also got to meet Lanie and Eliza in real life. It was AMAZING. Here's the photographic proof - check out our goofy grins.

(Also, they have really pretty hair, don't they?)

Suffice to say, the last few months have been a whirlwind, and it was SO HARD keeping quiet about everything. I'm so so excited that REBEL WING is out in the world...and that I can now sing Lanie and Eliza's (and Alloy and Amazon's) praises publicly. Yay!

If YOU are interested in working with Alloy, here's more information on their submission guidelines.

There's still time to enter my giveaway for a $25 Amazon gift card!

Aimee (Every Ugly Word), Heather (Imitation), and I are hosting a twitter party this Thursday (Aug 7th)! Use the hashtag #YAauthorparty to learn more about our books, get behind the scene insights on working with Alloy, and enter to win awesome prizes!

And if you haven't had a chance to check out REBEL WING yet, here's the link to its Amazon page. I hope you'll take a look and let me know what you think. :-)

Celebrating Heart & Soul by Lee Strauss!

    Heart & Soul

Heart & Soul is the third book in The Minstrel Series

(This is a connected book series - while each book can stand alone, they are best enjoyed in sequence.)

    She's heartbroken. He's heartless.

Gabriele Baumann-Smith is deliriously in love with her young husband Lennon.
Except, it turns out that Lennon Smith isn't his real name. In fact, he's full of secrets: a cottage on the southern British coast, an old girlfriend and... an identical twin brother.

Callum Jones—not his real name—can't believe his brother's widow came to England. He'd warned Mick—Lennon—that an inheritance could put the girl's life in danger, and he was right.

“Mrs. Smith” is the last thing Callum needs to worry about right now. She's beautiful, sure, takes his breath away at times. But when she looks at him, who does she see?

Gabriele's heart is battered and bruised. Can one brother fix what the other left behind? And will they live long enough to find out?

    BUZZ for Heart & Soul

"...this took a turn for the spy/thriller genre, which surprised me, but still carried the strong            romantic flavor and wonderful accompanying music, like the first two books. I think this is a great series and would recommend it to contemporary romance fans." Denise Jaden, author of Foreign Exchange

"Another great book by Lee! This one had action, wit and a forbidden love! Love the characters and their interaction with each other! Can't wait to see what she has in store for us next!" Tressa Sager, Amazon reviewer

"I don't want to give away what the danger is, but suffice it to say, it's a real and plausible threat. Gabrielle is a good leading lady. She doesn't back down from anything or anyone in this book, but she's still vulnerable, making her well-rounded and likable." J Harrell, Amazon reviewer

The Music fromThe Minstrel Series Volume 3 Heart & Soul

Featuring the author's daughter, Tasia Strauss!

Lee Strauss' thoughts on The Minstrel Series and Heart & Soul:

"My musician husband and I just randomly started talking about the idea of working on a project together - wouldn't it be great if we could collaborate and merge our two artistic worlds? Writing and Music? That was the seed that started the muse talking, and soon afterward The Minstrel Series was born!

For Heart & Soul, I knew I wanted to move the series from Germany to England (next to Ireland and Boston!) and that I needed a small coastal town not far from London. I used Google Earth to examine the British coastline to search for the perfect town and found it in Emsworth. Living in Germany part-time has its advantages and one of them is its proximity to England. My husband and I did a quick five day research trip. (It also came in handy for the next book, a Christmas novella set in London - stay tuned!)

Because of the musical aspect of this series, I'm always on the prowl for songs and singers. My connection to the singer-songwriter world via my musical husband has been a big advantage. My husband's musical genes have also been down to our kids, so it's exciting to involve my daughter Tasia in the project to be the singing voice of Gabriele."

Celebrating RaShelle Workman's A Beauty So Beastly!

What happens if beauty is also the beast...

Find out in A Beauty So Beastly. In this exciting new story, RaShelle takes the classic fairy tale, Beauty and the Beast and flips it on its head.

    Here's the summary:

“For your vanity, your cruelty, and your cold unfeeling heart, a curse I leave upon you . . .”

The stunning Beatrice Cavanaugh is considered American royalty. She has everything except the ability to love. Cursed on her eighteenth birthday, she becomes more beastly than ever, having a newfound craving for raw meat, and an undeniable yearning for the night. Bitterness is her only companion.

After accusing a maid of stealing, a disgustingly kind and exquisitely handsome guy named Adam shows up asking Beatrice to drop the charges against his mother.

Infuriated by his goodness, Beatrice vows to break him. Destroy him. Make him hurt the way she hurts. So she agrees. On one condition: Adam must take his mother’s place as a servant in the mansion.

Because Beatrice won’t stop until he’s more beastly than she is.

It's available now for only .99cents. Click HERE to purchase.

RaShelle Workman is the author of the popular Blood and Snow series. She loves to reinvent fairy tales that older teens and adults can sink their teeth into. Spreading the luck

So, lots of super cool stuff's been going on lately. :-D <----- that's an approximation of the big, dumb goofy grin I can't seem to wipe off my face.

    Sort of looks like this....

(Okay, no it doesn't. But wouldn't we all rather see Benedict Cumberbatch's adorable face? The answer is yes. The answer is always yes.)

Funny enough, I've also been finding TONS of four-leaf clovers. Like, every time I go outside to play with the lil' guy, I'll find a few. Not one. SEVERAL. One day I found ten! Maybe this overabundance is the reason for my wonderful luck lately. Maybe I just have freakish, deformed patches of clover. Either way, I would love to pass along a little of my luck to you. Because you are awesome and deserve it. I can tell.

Enter below to win one of three signed paperbacks of Shattered Veil, complete with a lucky four-leaf clover (or two!) pressed into its pages. If you already own SV, I'll send you a signed By Blood, Moon Child or What the Sea Wants - your choice. Maybe this is super cheesy, but I've been so happy and excited lately, I really want to spread the love. I would hate for all these lovely, lucky four-leaf clovers to go to waste!

Open US + INTL (limit 1 intl winner)

You can also click the link at the top of this page to enter the Goodreads contest for a signed Shattered Veil (no lucky clover with those, though).

    Also....have you seen THIS???

Yeah....things are getting pretty surreal over here. :-D (Uh oh. Goofy grin is back)

Hope you have a wonderful day! And good luck!
