    Under Construction

Hello everyone! I know it's been ages since I blogged! I've been hard at work on GRACE AND FURY (previously known as The Iron Flowers) and am gearing up to start writing the sequel. Eep!!

In the meantime, I'm doing some updating and revamping of my stay tuned for a whole new look coming in late Sept/early Oct...possibly around the time of a certain cover reveal.....dun dun DUN. ;-)

    See you soon!

    A Good Summer

It was a good summer (UNDERSTATEMENT. ;-)). I signed on to work with the amazing Linda Epstein, AND I sold some books! I'm so thrilled to share that I've sold a YA fantasy series to Little, Brown, in collaboration with my amazing friends at Alloy Entertainment, in a two-book deal! I'm SO excited about this series, which features two sisters trying to reunite by fighting their way out of two very different "prisons". Given what's happening in the world, I felt super inspired to write this story, which is very much centered on withstanding (maybe even toppling?) a cruel, restrictive patriarchy. My sisters are fierce and strong-willed, passionate and smart. And I love them SO MUCH. I can't wait for you to meet them!

It still feels so surreal that I get to work with one of my very favorite publishers, LITTLE, BROWN, and that my book will be ON THE SHELVES, where I will be able to visit it! And pet it! And take awkward pictures of me standing next to it! Basically, this is a complete and total dream come true, one I've been working toward for most of my life. Really, even saying I'm thrilled is an understatement. :-D

At any rate, here's the big announcement! In addition, THE IRON FLOWERS has also sold in the Netherlands, Italy, and France, which is completely blowing my mind. I never imagined my words would be translated into other languages! I might even be able to read a couple sentences in the French and Italian editions. Whoop whoop!

    It's been a long time...

I can't believe it's been a year since I last blogged! It's not because I haven't had news or things to talk's just that most of the stuff that's been going on hasn't been the kind I can share...yet.

But today is different! Today I DO have news I can share!

I'm thrilled to announce that I'm now represented by the incredible Linda Epstein of Emerald City Literary Agency. Seeing as Linda was on my "dream agent" list, I'm pretty well over the moon right now. :-D

I've been continuing with my YA writing, but in the last year I've also branched into writing picture books. My son is almost four and has been DEVOURING story after story...and after a while, all of those picture books got under my skin, and I started thinking of ideas of my own. There's something incredibly special about writing a story and being able to share it with YA isn't exactly his scene yet. But he always has the best reaction to my picture book attempts: "Mommy, read it again." Melts my heart every time.

At any rate, I'm looking forward to seeing where this new direction takes me, and I'm THRILLED to have Linda by my side for all the highs and lows to come. Hope you all are doing well! I'll try to blog more than once a year from now on. Promise. ;-)

My little Aris, all grown up

Today TORN SKY, the third book in the REBEL WING series, is unleashed on the world. My mind is not quite grasping that yet, so I want to talk about why I love this series so much, why Rebel Wing is the book of my heart, and what's next for me.

Me in my lucky dress, holding a bouquet of paper flowers made from the Rebel Wing series

The Rebel Wing series is particularly dear to my heart because it features a lot of really strong, powerful women. They aren't all strong in the same ways, but they ALL were aspirational for me as I was writing. I wanted to have Aris's strength of will, Dysis's unapologetic badassery, Galena's power to survive and overcome. I still do! At the end of the first book, one of my favorite characters, Dianthe, tells Aris, "you are strong enough." That has become a sort of mantra for me. It's not just about being strong enough to deal with the crap life dishes out. It's also about being strong enough to change my lifestyle, or exercise more, or drag myself out of bed when I've stayed up too late reading and my toddler is READY TO GO. It's about being strong enough to be myself, to love the people and things I love, to let my nerd flag fly. Strong enough to be a woman and a feminist and a believer that we can do better for this world...and that starts with me being better to those around me, better to the environment, better to myself. If there is one thing, one single thing, I hope my readers get out of reading this series, it's this : "YOU ARE STRONG ENOUGH."

For whatever you HAVE to face, and for whatever you WANT to do or become. Chase your dreams, believe in yourself, believe you can change and grow, believe you can triumph.

When I was writing the original draft of REBEL WING, I was really low on confidence and tough stuff was going on in my life. My husband was deployed. I'd written two books that hadn't sold to publishers. I was feeling lonely, discouraged, physically weak, and unsure that the life I wanted was within my grasp. Like Aris, I needed someone to remind me that I was strong enough. That's why REBEL WING is the book of my heart. Writing it, I went through as much of a transformation as Aris did. I found faith in myself again, in my writing, just when I needed it most.

I cried a lot writing TORN SKY. It was difficult saying goodbye to Aris and Dysis and the men who supported them and grew with them. It was hard to let them all go. But I am really happy with the way their stories played out, and I hope you will be too.

Thank you for reading. Thank you for caring about Aris and her adventures, and for joining us for this final chapter. Aw, jeez. There I go again. Excuse me, I need to find a tissue.

As for what's next, I've got a few exciting things in the pipeline. A weird little short story in a Time Travel anthology coming out this fall (that may just be the start of a new series, WE SHALL SEE ;-)), a fantasy you may be able to get your hands on in the spring, and another secret project or two coming along after that. So, ya know...there's lots more to come! Stay tuned and happy reading!

Torn Sky Releases in ONE WEEK!

Guys, I'm still kind of in shock about this.

When I wrote the original version of REBEL WING, I wasn't sure if I'd ever have a chance to continue Aris's story. But thanks to Alloy and Amazon, this trilogy will be complete a week from today.

    Sigh....the pretty.

But this means I WROTE TWO BOOKS IN A YEAR. While going through a long, stressful move to Hawaii. It still blows my mind. (I don't even know how I'm functioning anymore. Sheesh.)

The truth is, I couldn't have done it without the awesome folks at Alloy and my wonderful inlaws, who let us live with them during the move and watched my toddler so I'd have more time to work.

And boy am I ready to celebrate all that hard work! Please join me and some of my awesome YA writer friends on release day - August 4 - on Facebook, for a party full of prizes, games, and fun extras. Click here to RSVP!

And get ready......TORN SKY will be out a week from today!! Hooray!!

Want to know what Aris and the crew are up to?

    Here are a few hints...

    Spy games!

    New romance!

    Debilitating injuries!

A bomb that could destroy the world!

    It's gonna be a good time. ;-)
